We provided Heritage Consultancy and Architectural services for Parks Victoria and indigenous corporation GLaWAC at the Buchan Caves Reserve in East Gippsland, for the Fairy Caves Entry reconstruction.
This project was focused on the faithful reconstruction of the Fairy Caves Entry building which was severely damaged during the 2020 bushfires. Only the stone base and underground elements were saved, all timber and metal work were destroyed.
Our works involved researching the available information related to the original building, incorporating structural elements which matched the original log and rough timber construction.
We secured a Heritage Victoria exemption for these works based on the reconstruction of the original building.
Works were completed on a challenging site due to the absence of vehicle tracks to the building, so access was secured from an adjoining property to deliver the large timber posts and beams.
The resulting work has enabled Parks Victoria to continue use of this historic monument, with authenticity.
This is one of several projects we are working on at Buchan Reserve which will reconstruct buildings lost in the 2020 bushfires.
