We are pleased to present our design for the Architects Chair competition. Our team approached the design of the Architect’s Chair by analysing what connects our Architecture practice to its place, in Melbourne, Australia. Here we love our coffee and coffee culture, to the point where we half jokingly refer to ourselves as coffee-snobs – with much pride. We considered the competition requirements and our own approach to formulate accessible architectural solutions for our projects regardless of budget or status. We have created a chair which references Melbourne made – as a homage to the resourcefulness of local artisans, makers and tinkerers who are passionate about low-tech design solutions to complex problems. We have inverted the complexity, using simple materials in a detailed manner to formulate a chair which uses a series of subtle angles to imply movement. Tapering on all sides, the result is a chair which presents differently at all angles, to become an elegant object in its own right and celebrate the simplify and beauty of natural timber. Design should not be available only to the ‘elite,’ it should be accessible to anyone with an interest in the world around them – our approach is to create unique outcomes using regular materials in new ways.
